The Havana Cigar originated on the Canary Islands
To be precise, on the Island of La Palma. The original inhabitants of cuba used to smoke rolled tobacco leafs which they called cohibas long before Spanish conquerors brought tobacco plants and smoking to Europe. The Canary Islands usually were the first station on their long and arduous way home, namely the Island of La Palma, where they found an ideal climate for growing the tobacco plants.

Soon tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing became a new industry on the Island. The Spaniards perfectionized the art of cigar making which in the early nineteenth century culminated in the invention of the three-layer cigar as it is produced until today. Demand for good tobacco and cigars was so big that the Spanish crown decided to send Canary tobacco growers and cigar makers to Cuba to establish a tobacco industry there as well. After the Cuban revolution many came back to the Islands of their forefathers and of cigar making which resulted in a new boom of the Canary cigar industry, namely on La Palma Island.

Today very little tobacco is grown on the Island itself. Most cigars are made of Cuban and other tropical leafs. Spain is the major importer of cuban cigars (50%) and tobacco (75%). The Spaniards smoke more than 40 million cigars every year, far more than any other nation. Is it because cigars are so cheap in Spain? May be cigars are so cheap because cigar smoking is a traditional part of Spanish lifestyle.

A recent reorganization of logistics has lead to dramatic price reductions, wich come even more to effect if you order more than one item. As an EU-citizen you are allowed to buy up to 200 cigars from Spain and up to 50 cigars from the Canary Islands. We have extracted the shared shipping costs (10-20 EUR up to 1000 gr. and 17-27 EUR up to 2000 gr. depending on carrier of your choice) out off the item price now. Ask for the exact cost.
